Dart at 2014 News Xchange

This year, more than 500 delegates from the international broadcast community joined together at the Zofin Palace in Prague, Czech Republic for the fourteenth annual News Xchange conference to discuss best practices in a changing journalistic landscape.

Dart hosted a 40-person roundtable discussion about the implications of an increasingly dangerous environment for news managers, freelancers and local journalists. For many news professionals, the murders of James Foley and Steven Sotloff were game changers. Shapiro led the workshop to discuss the way forward, offering a platform for shared experiences and suggestions on how to make trauma awareness in journalism more accessible.

At the closing reception, co-hosted by Dart and Columbia Journalism School, Shapiro spoke of the extraordinary challenges faced by the international journalism community in 2014. Shapiro pointed to upcoming Dart Center workshops, fellowships and awards, as well as to integral programs offered by Columbia Journalism School, including Judith Matloff's crisis zone reporting course.
