Mexican Journalists Share Strategies for Staying Safe

“In this war for territory, the journalists have become victims,” said Marcela Turati during her speech at last month’s IRE Conference, in which she urged journalists to support their embattled colleagues in Mexico. “Because, unlike in traditional wars, in Mexico, journalists don't die in the crossfire, from a stray bullet, from walking in a minefield. In Mexico, the killers hunt down journalists, dragging them out of their offices and their houses, intercepting them in the street.”

As violence in Mexico continues to escalate, we point to an organization called Article 19, whose mission is for all people to enjoy their rights of freedom of expression, freedom of the press and to have access to information. Recently, they featured five video interviews of Mexican journalists who provide tips on staying safe while covering violence and organized crime, and describe the measures they must take to protect themselves when the authorities will not.
