This international conference, running from June 3rd to June 5th, will bring together media users and producers, peace building and conflict prevention specialists, representatives from the fields of media technology and security, public relations, the military, the arms industry as well as members of government and political parties to network and discuss the challenges and solutions for the future.

As in years past, the 2009 IRE conference, co-sponsored by the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma, will feature dozens of panels and workshops with the world's most distinguished investigative reporters, editors, producers and news directors. (See the complete schedule online.)

This year's meeting, organised by the European Soceity of Traumatic Stress Studies, will bring some of the world's leading experts to talk around the themes of "victims, violators, prevention and recovery." Representatives of Dart Centre Europe will be presenting an event for journalists in the region.

School shootings, child abduction, torture and murder are all examples of personal tragedies that make for important and compelling public news. But how does one approach the private grief of a victim without unnecessarily adding to the distress? And, when returning to the story, months or even years later, how does one insightfully and safely re-open the past?

This workshop, organised by Dart Centre Europe, the School of Journalism at Oslo University College and the Norwegian Union of Journalists, will look at the challenges and continuing impact of reporting in the midst of crisis. Participants will include journalists who reported on the school shootings in Finland and Germany, experts in the psychology of disaster situations and journalists who have investigated the aftermath of historical trauma.

This workshop immediately precedes ECOTS, the biannual conference of the European Traumatic Stress Society.
