    Panel: Journalists in War Zones

    A panel in Melbourne, Australia about journalists who cover war and conflict, the dangers they face and the protections afforded to them, sponsored by RMIT University and the Australian Red Cross. 

    Over the past decade, more than 1000 journalists and news support staff have been killed, many while covering war and conflict. Why do journalists go to war zones? What dangers do they face in their work? What protections are afforded to them by the Geneva Conventions, the rules of war?

    Symposium: Representations of Violence and Disaster in News Media

    In San Diego, at the American Psychological Association's Annual Convention, a symposium of scholars on psychological, methodological, and theoretical approaches examining current research in journalism and trauma.

    The American Psychological Association's 118th Annual Convention, taking place in San Diego, CA, features presentations on contemporary psychological research. This symposium, chaired by Dart Center Research Director Elana Newman, will look at sexual violence in the news media, coverage of domestic violence, and naming survivors in newspaper articles.

    Workshop: Understanding Psychological Trauma

    In Bangkok, a workshop by Dart Centre Australasia and the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand about understanding psychological trauma and enhancing resilience when exposed to potentially traumatic events.

    Reporting history is exhilarating and exciting, even when that history contains violence and disaster. Nonetheless, these events sometimes also confront the reporter with the worst that the world has to offer – tragedy, suffering and trauma.

    In this workshop, participants can expect to take away: A deeper understanding of human trauma responses; how this translates to self care, peer support and traumatised interview subjects; applied techniques for enhancing resilience; and an opportunity to learn from the shared experience of workshop participants of ‘what works.'

    This will be an interactive workshop facilitated by Brett McLeod, a journalist with the Nine Network in Australia, and Cait McMahon a psychologist, trauma and journalism specialist and managing director of Dart Centre Australasia.

    Summer School: Investigative Reporting in the Balkans

    In Serbia, a week-long summer school for investigative reporting run by the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) from August 22-28.

    Leading International and Balkan journalists and trainers will gather for a week of workshops and roundtable discussions on the issues facing journalists in the region.

    On Wednesday, August 25 from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm, the conference will feature a workshop by Gavin Rees, Director, Dart Centre Europe and Milorad Ivanovic, Deputy Editor of Blic entitled "Dealing with Victims of Trauma." The training will cover how to ask questions and get answers without opening new wounds for victims of war, violence, and crime.
