Film Screening and Panel: Breaking News Breaking Down

May 29, 2009
6:15pm

The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance in collaboration with Dart Centre Australasia and RMIT University present a free screening of "Breaking News Breaking Down." The film will be followed by a panel discussion on the media's role in community recovery following the bushfires, featuring:

Mike Walter, film producer and journalist
Brett McLeod, Network Nine senior journalist
Dr. Rob Gordon, trauma psychologist

"Breaking News Breaking Down" is a short documentary, directed by former TV reporter and 2005 Ochberg Fellow Mike Walter and featuring interviews with a range of journalists and experts from the Dart network.

The film grew out of a 2007 Dart Society project called Target: New Orleans that sent reporters to the Gulf Coast to lend a hand in post-Katrina reconstruction. The film interweaves this trip with reporters speaking candidly about the hardest stories they've covered and how, as Walter says, "breaking news can break you down."
