Panel: Witnessing the Human Cost of Environmental Change

June 23, 2010
11:30am

Good environmental reporting is not just about the science. Alongside the technical analysis lies the human impact. Telling the stories of vulnerable people, who have often been adversely affected by environmental damage in profound and dramatic ways, requires research, knowledge and sensitivity — and in some cases genuine personal courage. What does it take for journalists to capture faitfhully and clearly the experience of people caught up in environmental crisis, be it the slow grind of ever-increasing resource loss or the sudden calamity of a catastrophic flood? How how do reporters remain resilient in situations where their own families have been caught up in those very events?

Convened by Dart Centre Europe, panelists include John Pope, Pulitzer Prize-winning staff writer for The Times-Picayune, New Orleans' leading newspaper, and Roosevelt Jean Francois, an award-winning radio journalist and the leader of CECOSIDA,  a grassroots community organisation that trains Haitian journalists in how to effectively and sensitively report social, environmental and humanitarian issues.
