Application Deadline: Carter Center Mental Health Journalism Fellowship

The program application window will be open beginning Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Active journalists who are U.S. citizens or residents working in all media forms with a minimum of three years’ experience are welcome to apply. Projects are tailored to the experience and interests of the fellows and should be relevant to the dynamic behavioral health landscape in the United States. Fellows are awarded a $10,000 stipend upon selection -- they not required to leave their current employment. Preference is given to journalists with support for or commitment to publishing or broadcasting fellowship projects.

The full application must be completed and submitted online by 11:59pm Eastern on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. The application for the 2020-2021 Rosalynn Carter Fellowships for Mental Health Journalism is available here. Interested applicants should submit the following:

• Resume: Resumes should include media organizations for which you have worked or produced work, professional memberships, and other achievements.
• Summary of Proposed Project: A short paragraph describing the issue you would like to report on, why you have selected that issue, and what you hope to achieve with your reporting. (1,000-character limit).
• Informal Essay: An essay describing your reasons for applying for the fellowship; outlining your proposed project and a plan for completion, including your expected project timeline and potential obstacles, if any; the significance and timeliness of your topic, and the potential impact of the project (1,000-word limit).
• Samples of Professional Work: Up to three examples of the applicant's best work may be submitted. At least one of the samples should be in the media form proposed.
• Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation from people familiar with the applicant's work should comment on the applicant's abilities and potential as a journalist. Recommenders will receive an email asking for each letter to be submitted online no later than 11:59pm Eastern on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.
• Letter of Support: If the applicant has a full-time employer, one letter from the applicant's publisher, editor, producer, manager, or director, supporting the application is required. If the applicant is self-employed, the letter of support must come from a leader in the supporting media organization who has decision-making authority to support your reporting. Preference will be given to those applicants with letters from editors or publishers that indicate a clear interest and strong likelihood to publish or broadcast the fellowship project. This individual will receive an email asking for the letter to be submitted online no later than 11:59pm Eastern on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.
