2023 Dart Asia Pacific Fellowship

The Dart Centre Asia Pacific Fellowship offers seasoned journalists, editors and freelancers in the Asia-Pacific region a special opportunity to improve coverage of tragic events.

Online applications are now open for the 2023 Dart Asia Pacific Fellowship, a unique seminar programme for experienced journalists, editors, and freelancers, who want to deepen their knowledge of psychological trauma and improve coverage of violence, conflict, tragedy, and disaster.

Applications close March 15, 2023, and the Fellowship will be held on May 24-28, 2023 in Brisbane, Australia. Participants should allow for days either side of those dates for travelling to Australia.

Below are the guidelines for the 2023 Fellowship.

The Dart Centre Asia Pacific Fellowship offers experienced journalists and their editors in the Asia-Pacific region a special opportunity to share and learn about journalism and trauma.

Upon completion of the program, participants will be known as “Dart Asia Pacific Fellows” and will join an exclusive group of journalists across the region. Fellows are encouraged to continue to advocate for trauma-literacy among journalists, and to support colleagues who are experiencing the impact of trauma.

While applications are strongly encouraged for this 2023 fellowship from journalists in Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Tuvalu. applications will be considered from anyone in the Asia Pacific region who meet the criteria.

The broad focus of our program will be on the kinds of trauma experienced by journalists in reporting on climate change.

We encourage applying as a two-person team, consisting of a senior journalist and an editor who should apply jointly from the same news organisation (except in the case of freelancers). Each team member is expected to write their own individual application. Single applications will also be accepted. All applications must include the materials listed below, or they will not be considered.

Reporting responsibly and credibly on violence and traumatic events —violence, natural disasters and accidents, civil unrest, war, and genocide — are among the greatest challenges facing journalists globally. The 2023 Dart Asia Pacific Fellowship aims to deepen journalists’ and editors’ knowledge of trauma to improved coverage of such events.

The 2023 Dart Asia Pacific Fellowship will provide a place for journalists to come together and share their experiences in the field and to learn from each other. The program will be led by experienced Dart Centre facilitators and supported by former Fellows.

The Fellowship programme consists of five days of seminars and conversations, beginning May 24 and concluding May 28, 2023, in Brisbane, Australia. The fellowship offers briefings by leading experts in the trauma and journalism fields along with peer-to-peer discussions on the many challenges of covering tragedy and violence. It is compulsory to attend all sessions each day of the program. Free time will be given.

The fellowship covers all travel, accommodations, ground expenses and most meals while attending the program.

Insurance, visas, and related costs are the responsibility of fellows and NOT covered by the programme or Dart Centre. Participants will NOT be paid for attendance at the Fellowship, however a small allowance for incidental expenses will be provided.
