Amid Threats, Australia Carries Out Terror Sweep

As the Islamic State began to name Australians as targets, Australia’s biggest-ever anti-terrorism operation was carried out last week with upwards of 800 police raiding more than a dozen homes across the suburbs of Sydney, the nation’s largest city. And in Melbourne, two anti-terror policemen were stabbed before killing a man who had allegedly threatened the Prime Minister.

In conjunction with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Dart Centre Asia Pacific presents a new teaching video dealing with the treatment of news sources, "Getting it Right: Ethical Reporting on People Affected by Trauma." In the wake of Australia's child sex abuse scandals, the Royal Commission will be "bearing witness on behalf of the nation" when hearings begin in September. On August 30, the Dart Centre hosted a special forum for news professionals preparing to cover the hearings and the sensitive issue of child sex abuse. (See the event lineup here.)

In the wake of Australia's child sex abuse scandals, the Royal Commission will be "bearing witness on behalf of the nation" when hearings begin in September. Journalists, too, will be called upon to inform the public, and to report on the sensitive proceedings. The Dart Centre has convened a special forum for news professionals preparing to cover the hearings, which took place in Sydney on August 30. In February 1972, I was 18 years old, a couple of months out of high school and beginning a cadetship at the now-dead Sun News Pictorial in Melbourne. It was my first week at the paper and I had been sent for the day to watch police rounds at work.

It was a slow to no-news day at Russell Street so the police reporter suggested we drive up to the Sherbrook Forest where there was a search for a man who'd been missing for a week.
