Bearing Witness for the Nation

In the wake of Australia's child sex abuse scandals, the Royal Commission will be "bearing witness on behalf of the nation" when hearings begin in September. Journalists, too, will be called upon to inform the public, and to report on the sensitive proceedings. The Dart Centre has convened a special forum for news professionals preparing to cover the hearings, which took place in Sydney on August 30. Castro's Victims: Grace Amid Terror

Frank Ochberg, MD, chairman emeritus of the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, served as expert witness for the prosecution in the trial of Ariel Castro for holding captive Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight for nearly a decade. In advance of the sentencing, Ochberg wrote prosecutors his assessment of the impact of Castro's acts on the three women, explaining the dynamics of victimization, trauma and endurance.
