The daylong symposium: Sandy Hook and Beyond: Breaking News, Trauma and Aftermath took place on Monday at Columbia University. Regional and national journalists were joined by community leaders, mental health experts, policy advocates and Sandy Hook families and shared perspectives, discussed lessons learned and pointed the way towards responsible news coverage going forward.

Our friends at the Dart Society have posted a special report collecting journalists’ memories of and reflections on the upcoming September 11 anniversary. The centerpiece is an evocative and unsettling collage of essays and video by New York journalist Jacques Menasche on the impact of the attacks on his young son and other children who were attending school nearby. 

The Deadly Choices at Memorial

This gripping narrative, which exposes the decision-making that left 18 patients dead after injections of painkillers and sedatives in a flooded hospital in New Orleans, is a winner of the 2010 Dart Award for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. It was originally published by ProPublica and The New York Times Magazine in August, 2009.
