Several organizations have been soliciting and organizing aid for journalists affected by the South Asian tsunami.

Internews has established a "Journalist Support Fund" that will direct aid to local media outlets. Internews is accepting online donations through "Network for Good." An Internews press release explains:

Local audiences need accurate, investigated, and balanced information in their local languages during this chaotic and traumatic time and relief agencies need credible feedback from the communities on the services they need to provide.

Unfortunately, most of these local media outlets, like the towns and villages they serve, have been devastated by the earthquake and tsunami.

We are making a worldwide appeal to individuals, foundations, and corporations to invest in the rehabilitation of local independent media in Aceh and Sri Lanka.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which represents more than 500,000 journalists worldwide, has made an appeal to journalists' trade unions to assist media workers in tsunami and earthquake-affected areas. According to a January 4 report from IFJ, the organization has already sent 18,000 Euro from its emergency assistance fund. The IFJ also provides contact information for those who wish to donate to their safety fund.

The International News Safety Institute (INSI) has sent 50 of its basic first aid kits to Indonesia's Alliance of Independent Journalists (AIJ). INSI also provides contact information for others wishing to contribute to AIJ.
