Frequent, repetitive viewing of violent news-related video and other media raises news professionals’ vulnerability to a range of psychological injury, including anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress disorder. Are newsroom managers doing enough to protect their staff, are journalists allowed to speak up when they’ve spent the day looking at horrors on their computer screen? Should safer viewing practices be a focus for the broader public as well?

In Dallas, Texas, the Dart Center is hosting a panel discussion at the 32nd Annual ISTSS Conference on working with traumatic imagery, specifically the need for exposure mitigation strategies in journalism and the wider consequences for social media consumption.

Speakers:

Chris Brewin, Professor of Clinical Psychology, University College London Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience
Roxane Cohen Silver, Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior, Medicine, and Public Health, University of California Irvine School of Social Ecology
Anthony Feinstein, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Toronto
Gavin Rees, Director, Dart Centre Europe
Claire Wardle, Co-founder, Eyewitness Media Hub
