A Deadliners Event: Trauma Journalism

Cecilia Ballí has been a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly since 2000 and is a cultural anthropologist at the University of Texas here in Austin. She has written about the U.S.-Mexico border for years, especially around issues of violence and has published essays in Harper’s Magazine among others and is currently writing a book about the border fence and the historical drawing and redrawing of the U.S.-Mexico borderline. Cecilia is also a fellow of the Dart Center for journalism and trauma at Columbia University.

Melissa del Bosque joined The Texas Observer staff in 2008 and specializes in reporting on immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border. Her work has been published in publications including TIME magazine and the Mexico City-based Nexos magazine, and she is about to embark on the prestigious Dart Fellowship for trauma journalism at Columbia University.

Alex Hannaford is a British-born freelance journalist living in Texas. He has written about the death penalty, crime, incarceration, religion and human interest issues for publications including the Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times magazines, The Guardian, GQ and the Texas Observer. He has reported from West Africa, Hong Kong, and Guantanamo Bay. He worked as a feature writer and commissioning editor on the London Evening Standard before going freelance in 2003. Hannaford was a 2012 Dart Center Ochberg Fellow.

Erin Trieb is a photojournalist based in Austin and has shot for TIME, The New York Times, MSNBC.com, Newsweek, The Times in London and The Wall Street Journal among others. She’s currently pursuing a long-term documentary project on the social effects of post-war trauma on US military returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Her work has received international recognition and awards from World Press Photo and Pictures Of The Year International.
