In partnership with the ACOS Alliance and the Bronx Documentary Center, the Dart Center is offering its annual four-day crisis zones reporting course to 16 freelance journalists worldwide at no cost. Application deadline is July 31st.
The Dart Center, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Canadian Journalism Forum on Violence and Trauma have launched a new suite of online resources designed to better prepare newsrooms, journalists and educators for coverage of trauma, violence and disaster. “This new free toolkit builds on years of journalistic innovation and evidence-based trauma science to bring news professionals and students alike foundational skills to strengthen reporting and enhance resilience,” said Bruce Shapiro, Executive Director of the Dart Center.

Today we announce the 2024 Dart Ochberg Fellows! "This year’s 14 Ochberg Fellows all personify the special ethical and professional commitments demanded by trauma reporting," said Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center's executive director. "Representing 11 countries and six continents, they are all journalism innovators who have delved deeply into the impact of violence and tragedy, and will come together in New York at a moment when their work is more urgently needed than ever."

The Dart Center announced the cohort for its Brazil News Editors Institute on Early Childhood to be held August 23-25, 2024 in Rio de Janeiro. The seminar will bring together 23 editors from some of Brazil's main news organizations, hailing from 12 Federation Units, from all Brazilian macro-regions. The selected group will convene for three days of expert briefings, panels, workshops and peer-to-peer conversations around news coverage of issues affecting the youngest children.

Honorable Mentions went to The New Yorker and The New York Times. "The 2024 Dart Awards honor the range and depth of trauma-aware journalism, illuminating the lives of individuals and communities too often invisible in the news agenda with empathy, journalistic rigor and compelling, nuanced narrative," said Bruce Shapiro, the Dart Center’s executive director.
This style guide is designed as a quick, authoritative reference for reporters, editors and producers working on tight deadlines. It includes brief evidence-informed guidance on news choices, language usage and ethics in reporting on the impact of trauma on individuals, families and communities; recommendations for appropriate use of relevant psychological and scientific terminology; and special considerations when reporting on consequential trauma-laden issues such as racism and sexual violence.
